Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta

Mountain Cultural/natural/religious point of interest

EThis is a mother church of the Calanca valley, an important and significant medieval building, with precious furnishings, set in a spectacular position. First documented in 1219 and extended over the centuries, the church has a round arch stone portal and richly painted coffered ceiling. Inside there are three large canvases (17th century), one depicting the Battle of Lepanto; there are also numerous wall paintings and valuable painted wooden altarpieces.

Piazza della Centena

Mountain Cultural/natural/religious point of interest

Once a field, located at the south entrance to the village, the general meeting, with elective and legislative functions (Centena) of the Comungrande (the combined communities of Mesolcina and Calanca) was held here on 25 April each year. The square and memorial fountain were inaugurated in 1996, to mark the 500th anniversary of the Mesolcina valley joining the Grey League.
