Ingresso Monti di Careno

Mountain Information

The 'monti' (mounts) were small villages where shepherds stayed when they moved their livestock to seasonal grazing pastures. Each mount was usually accessible from the lakeside village via a road of large steps, called 'strada di Monte" (road to the mount). At Careno there are some randomly arranged rock huts that were only used to provide temporary shelter on the way up to the mountain pastures in spring or back down in autumn.
